Egyptian Coffee
- Herbs
In the 16th century, coffee spread in the Islamic world from the Hijaz to Cairo, then to Syria and Istanbul. Yemen monopolized coffee exports, notably from its port, Mocha. Egypt, a key Ottoman province, traded Yemeni coffee, with Cairo merchants leading distribution. Coffee became part of Istanbul's culture by 1539, with the first coffeehouse opening around 1554. The Turkish method of brewing coffee closely resembles modern techniques. Coffee was traditionally consumed for its stimulating properties and is known to provide a temporary boost in energy and alertness.
